What is Sterling Silver?
To create stronger and more durable products, pure silver is often alloyed with other metals, and sterling silver is the most widely used silver alloy.
Fine silver (99.9% pure) is generally too soft for making large, functional items. Therefore, it is usually mixed with copper to enhance its strength. Sterling silver is an alloy consisting of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals (such as copper) by weight. The sterling silver standard requires a minimum millesimal fineness of 925. This alloy retains the luster and ductility of the precious metal while improving its durability.
Other metals can also be used instead of copper, typically to enhance specific properties of the basic sterling alloy, such as reducing casting porosity, preventing firescale, and increasing tarnish resistance.
Will Sterling Silver tarnish?
Chemically speaking, silver does not react with oxygen or water at room temperature, which means it does not tarnish easily.
